We recently reclaimed a 20 foot Cypress log from the bottom of the St. Johns River near the old abandon wood mill in Genava Florida which was in operation from approx. 1850 to 1901.
This piece of wood was harvested some time during the period that this mill was in operation and inadvertently sank near the mill. So we know that this log spent over 100 years on the bottom of the river.
The end of the log was hollowed out by over 100 years of erosion and being exposed to the elements. Due to the erosion and hollowing of the end of the log it appeared to me to be a sharks head with its' mouth open.
We used the end of the log for this sculpture.
I shaped it up to appear as a bull shark, carefully installed a real set of Bull Sharks teeth in the jaw to make it look real.
I attempted to leave as much of the natrual worm holes and other effect from being underwater to illustrate the natural attributes of the log when we recovered it from 100 years of being submerged.
After counting the growth rings per inch we discovered that this tree was alive for over 1000 years which means that this tree was alive when Christopher Columbus set foot on U.S. Soil
Comes with a certification of Authenticity and photographs of the log being raised from the river.
This piece was on display for two months at in the Seminole Historic Museum in Oviedo Florida.
